2017 Shell Eco-marathon team:
we're heading to Detroit April 25!
Our vehicles for 2017
urban concept or prototype?
This year our team from James B. Dudley High School will be taking two Urban Concept vehicles to the 2017 Shell Eco-marathon in Detroit:
1. Urban Concept/Battery Electric
2. Urban Concept/Gasoline
Vehicles entered in the Urban Concept Category are designed to be similar to today’s production passenger cars. They must have everything from disc brakes to power steering and windshield wipers.
The Prototype Category vehicles are smaller and generally 3-wheel designs. They're built to be super light-weight and able test for the highest fuel-efficiency. The Dudley team has entered many Prototype vehicles during the past 6 years.

special Thanks to the Duke University Shell Eco-marathon team!
Our Battery Electric team at Dudley appreciated the visit from students from Duke University to help with advice on building our controller. Duke also hosted the Dudley team during a visit to their workshop on the Duke University campus.
Best of luck to the Duke University SEM team in Detroit! They'll be competing in the Prototype Category/Batter Electric.

Rick Lewis, Program Director
Since 2011, Rick Lewis, CTE Educator/Automotive, has been taking a group of his student to participate in the international Shell Eco-marathon. Each year, Mr. Lewis keeps focused on doing what it takes to overcome challenges and provide a new and diverse team of Greensboro youth with the experience of a lifetime.
The Dudley Shell Eco-marathon team began its first year with one vehicle and only 2 students able to travel to the event in Houston. In 2015, the team consisted of 12 students and 3 vehicles taking part in over 5 days of extraordinary experiences, on and off the track, at the Shell competition in Detroit.
Throughout the school year and summer months, Rick Lewis continues to find new and valuable experiences for his students, including industry visits and work or paid summer research opportunities, for both current and past members of his team. His spacious automotive shop at Dudley becomes a welcoming home after-school for all the lucky teenagers who manage to discover his program - lucky to find in Mr. Lewis daily encouragement and a life-long friend.
